MUFON, the 46-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to the scientific research on, search for, and education on unidentified flying objects, hired RewiredUX to update and redesign their website, the hub for all of their operations. As the UX intern, I got to take on some elements of this project.

MUFON’s members are worldwide and need a simplified, responsive site that allows for easy form reporting of a huge array of sightings. Additionally, the site needed aesthetic and organizational updates. I came on board as the information architecture was being finalized, and I got to work on branding and wireframes.

Because I jumped into this project in progress, my usual order of operations of research, analysis, and design did not quite apply. Instead, here are some highlights of my contributions.

One of the biggest challenges was the “Report a UFO” form. Made up of hundreds of ticky boxes, the current form is clunky and difficult to navigate. My mission was to break the form down into logical categories and design an interface that is easy to use on mobile devices.

This involved understanding and sorting out the various features that one must identify when reporting an UFO. With those criteria in mind, we designed easy touch targets for quick and easy use while reporting, segmenting out different types of questions to reduce mental fatigue and information overload. Further consideration was given to the order in which a reporter would likely recall details, and we were careful to avoid leading questions that could skew reporting data.

MUFON's entire website needed an overhaul, from information architecture to aesthetics to conversion to responsive design. Using a combination of Axure and Webflow, we redesigned the site to fit the modern standards of the web, giving it a visual facelift in the process.

As part of the aesthetic overhaul of the website, we came up with fresh branding for MUFON. I created mood boards based on client feedback previously gathered by my mentor, iterating on the designs and sharing with the client regularly. We also redesigned their logo, rapidly exploring and inventing a variety of options before arriving at a final design.

While most of the MUFON designs are finalized, the fundraising goal required for implementation has not yet been reached. Hopefully, funds will be secured soon. I want to believe.
